She tries not to look down to the frothing water roiling against the rocks at the cliff’s base. It should be beautiful instead it feels oppressive, as if the vines might animate, twist and curl around her neck and strangle her to death. The arch’s skeleton has long since rotted away and the flowers droop into the path, clinging trails and vines that brush against her head and shoulders. Someone, years ago, built an archway along the arbor. It is cool inside this miniature forest the sky is blotted out by the purple-throated wisteria that drapes across and between the trees. A gray stone waist-high wall is all that stands between her and the cliffside. The path ahead is marked by towering cypress and laurel, verdant and lush. In her panic, she barely notices the pain. Her hair has come loose from its braid, flies unbound behind her like gossamer wings. A deep cut blooms red along her thigh, and the blood runs down her calf. The hem catches on a branch a large rend in the fabric slashes open, exposing her leg. The white dress, long and filmy, hampers her effort to run. Sales were up 15% at Washington, D.C.’s Politics and Prose, according to general manager Tracey Filar Atwood, who was unsure whether to attribute the increase to the attention the store has received in the wake of co-owner and founder Carla Cohen’s death, American Express’s Small Business Day on Saturday, or luck. While few bookstores could match Saturday sales at Park Road Books in Charlotte, N.C., up more than 30% because of the the closing of a nearby Joseph-Beth Booksellers and the impending closure of a Borders store, many reported solid sales for Black Friday weekend, a PW survey found. The reportedly imminent launch of Google Editions could help indies gain some traction in the e-book business however. “I have a feeling this is going to be a real Kindle/Nook Christmas,” predicted Buttonwood’s Betsy Detwiler. Hardcover sales remained on the soft side and some booksellers were anxious about the impact of e-books and e-readers. Memoirs, led by the difficult-to-get The Autobiography of Mark Twain and the still surprisingly hot Decision Points, were the most popular titles. Many of the independent booksellers contacted by PW yesterday reported solid holiday sales over the Thanksgiving weekend. The truth is that Ito is incredible in thinking up how to mess with everyday world in order to bring horror elements and create an ominous and very unsettling atmosphere. To be frank, that’s not really the truth. Junji Ito is an acclaimed mangaka and arguably one of the best in making horror stories. Still, the result seems to be rather frowned upon, so there arises a question – who’s at fault – Junji Ito or ufotable? Other ufotable’s projects had been even more obscure, so Gyo was a perfect opportunity to show off technical capabilities and affirm the name of the studio as one among the best in the industry. Returning to Gyo, its anime adaptation was made by ufotable, and that’s another interesting fact since at the time it was made the studio was just starting to build up its fame – Kara no Kyoukai movies weren’t as known and Fate/Zero had started half a year ago, but in times of Steins Gate it was crucial not to be a studio known only for one good anime. Despite being popular, the only Ito’s work that has received an anime adaptation remains Gyo (which is interesting by itself), and Ito’s relation with anime remains relevant because of the new adaptation of some of his stories that has been announced some time ago. For once, Junji Ito is a name you probably encountered if you’ve had any opportunity to familiarize with horror manga. Still, there are a number of reasons why Gyo is worth investigating. First of all – why is Gyo important? It isn’t, really. Here is a quick description and cover image of book Dear Justice League written by Michael Northrop which was published in. Brief Summary of Book: Dear Justice League by Michael Northrop A people who takes pride in family values has found it relatively easy nevertheless to support the destruction of the children and families of other people (even their fellow Christians’), and to support as well as a dramatic reduction in aid to identifiable refugees, to say nothing of the aggressive expulsion of wayfarers among us who are tagged as “illegal” because they were born somewhere else. Partly because I’ve been troubled by the contradictions between the ethic of welcoming the stranger and alien that is so central to Christian (and Jewish, and Islamic) codes of ethics, and the fact that Christians proved to be among the most enthusiastic supporters of our country’s recent draconian policies against immigrants and refugees. I’ve been troubling over the notion of home since our Center for Public Humanities’ excellent Humanities Symposium on the topic this past February, partially out of the interest to punch up the substance of my own presentation on the idea of Home and the Pratice of the Humanities. Home: A Short History of an Idea by Witold Rybczynski Charley Boorman is the son of director John Boorman he’s made appearances in some of his father’s films and he thinks he’s a much bigger movie star than he really is. Yes, we can’t go much further without addressing Charley. They decided the trip through Siberia was probably not going to go well and it wouldn’t look good for their bikes so they declined the offer to hand over free bikes, at which point Charley Boorman threw an absolute lying-on-the-floor screaming-and-thrashing tantrum. The first plan was to approach KTM, a brand of bright orange off-road and adventure bikes. For example, the motorbikes they used were given to them by BMW, and that was where the first bad taste in my mouth came in. That and getting various other companies to sponsor it. The background is that Ewan & Charley wanted to do an adventure and found the best – maybe the only – way to fund it was to persuade a TV production company to film it. Another motorbike journey, this time from John O’Groats to Cape Town via East Africa. That was a big deal and a big adventure and I don’t think Long Way Down ever quite recaptured the magic.Īll the same, it was the first one I saw. It’s a sequel to their 2004 motorcycle adventure around the world, Long Way Round, where they rode from London to New York via Siberia and Mongola. Most people don’t start the Ewan McGregor & Charley Boorman machine with Long Way Down. If you want to know my thoughts on The Prince, The Guard and The Queen than please visit my reviews. So for this, I’ll be mini reviewing the whole book Happily Ever After in general (a summary of my thoughts) and the new stories I just read. The Selection and The Elite- I read these before we had a blog so I have no reviews for them :[ the short is, I wasn’t a huge fan but I did enjoy The Elite more than The Selection. Just as a recap, here are my reviews for the other books in the series. Meaning I haven’t read the other half of the stories, The Maid, Stories from Celeste, After The One and The Favorite. The ones I have already read and reviewed are The Queen, The Prince and The Guard. Why am I still reading these books? Sure I think the idea is kind of cute and the romance is cheesy (I LOOOOVE cheesy romance) but I haven’t like a single book in The Selection series unless you count The One.īefore this handy dandy collection of novellas came out, I had already read about half of them. I’m not trying to sound rude when I say this but…. There's no better time to get into Lord of the Rings w ith all the adaptations out (plus a healthy number of supporting materials, like The Simarillion). If Lord of the Rings is still new to you, or maybe Rings of Power was your first introduction to Tolkien's vast world, you're not alone. Part of the reason Lord of the Rings has lasted as long as it has is because the books contain the universal battle between good and evil forces, and center on a cast of characters you can't help but root for. It's one of the most expensive television shows ever made, and isn't even based entirely on the books. Tolkien's acclaimed books with its new television series Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The fantasy epic series was first published in 1954, and since then has stayed in the public consciousness through movies–two Peter Jackson trilogies have depicted both the original books and their prequel The Hobbit–and television, as Amazon Prime Video has once again ignited excitement over J.R.R. Few books have stood the test of time as well as the Lord of the Rings books. |
